JAZZWA 2012 WAMi FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

JAZZWA, in partnership with WAM, is proud to present The 2012 JAZZWA Showcase as part of the WAMi festival. No less than 25 musicians will converge for this celebration of original contemporary jazz that will showcase a diverse array of music composed and performed by some of WA’s finest jazz practitioners.

Featuring the dynamic and textured sounds of the 15 piece Horizon Art Orchestra alongside the nuanced swing of the Glyn MacDonald Quartet as well as new music from acclaimed vocalist Victoria Newton and her sextet, this event promises a musical journey that won’t disappoint.

EXPERIMENTAL WAMi FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

WAM is proud to present its first ever Experimental Live Showcase as part of the 2012 WAMi Festival. Western Australia has a strong pedigree when it comes to boundary-pushing music, and the showcase ably represents this legacy, offering up both solo performers as well as bands who's sounds escape easy categorisation.

Solo acts playing on the night include the post-industrial noise of Ourobonic Plague, the atmospheric guitar-based initiation rite of Craig McElhinney and the weirdo funtimes of Chris Cobilis. Bands on the bill include low frequency noise-duo Candied Limbs, the atmospheric industrial sounds of Heytesburg, propulsive math-rock duo Race To Your Face and the organic-electronic hybrid beast that is Usurper of Modern Medicine.

FAIRBRIDGE FESTIVAL WAMi FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

Wednesday 30 May, 8:00pm





A night of top-flight world and folk-roots music. Having just celebrated its 20th anniversary, Fairbridge Festival of World and Folk Music is WA’s premier world and folk music event with around 90 acts from around the globe performing each year. The showcase will be headlined by the 10-piece Ensemble Formidable, an electric manouche-swing farmyard mash-up of jazz-droid chickens getting down to Django. The dashing outfit comes complete with horns, strings, accordion, junk percussion & synth, producing a sound reminiscent of Zappa grinding with a cocktail at a 1940's Parisian rave.

The Fremantle's darlings of quirk-folk Rachel and Henry Climb a Hill will kick off the showcase. Since winning the WAM World & Folk Song of the Year in 2010, their playful effervescence has endeared them to audiences across the state. The group is vibrant and unpredictable, spinning colourful stories of kites, pirates and lost loves. Familiar face Rhys Wood blends acoustic, pop, folk and classical influences to make music that comes from a heartfelt perspective, with always something to say.

JUMPCLIMB PARTY WAMI FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

Party over here, party over there, come on everybody throw your hands in the air... OK, so maybe that's a bit too 90's R&B, but you get the idea!

JumpClimb Party WAMI Festival Showcase is all about showing Perth's party skills. The line up is the creme de la creme of the local beats, disco, dub, hip hop scenes, all rolled into one genre we like to call PARTY!

Featuring The Empty Cup who has played an integral part in continuing to evolve the Perth hip hop scene. A regular host for the highly acclaimed co-lab jam band, staple support for high profile international artists such as Akil or even Sade, and dropping his first single off his brand new EP on the night. The Sunshine Brothers: From deeply atmospheric live dub-outs to dancefloor shaking ska moments a night out with the Brothers is ray of dub-shine.

 Bastian’s Happy Flight are a band of electronic musicians/visionists taking a genuine adoration of the hitherto pinnacle of pop and injecting it back into itself. Think camp-disco’s straight cousin. 

Sam Perry: With a guitar effects pedal, a loop station and a microphone, Sam has crafted the looping process into something completely innovative. YouTube is your friend here – type “Sam Perry Perth” to have your mind blown.

THE WIRE MAG WAMI FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

A WAMi Festival first! Four of Perth’s top emerging artists Split Seconds, Emperors, Ruby Boots and Warning Birds collectively launching three singles and one album all together At The Bakery for The Wire Mag WAMi Festival Showcase.

Perth's premier exponents of quality pop songwriting Split Seconds return home to officially launch the track ‘Top Floor’ on their national single tour as part of the 2012 WAMi Festival.

Hot off their recent widespread airplay for Plastic Guns and Ready When I Say Go, Emperors hit Perth for the WAMi Festival as part of their national Stay Frosty album tour.

WAMi Award winning six-piece Ruby Boots will be releasing the latest single 'Wise Up' from last year's EP 'At Last' and a music clip to go with it.

Perth’s young four-piece Warning Birds who have been generating significant buzz will celebrate the launch of their debut single ‘Sally’ - Winner of the 2011 WAMi Rock Song of the Year.

SOUNDWORKS WAMI FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

The WA heavy music/metal scene is one of the most prominent and well supported in the country. With a close-knit metal community, the scene continues to grow with large crowd numbers in attendance at shows, all witnessing the high quality acts WA has to offer. Crossing all genres of heavy music, many WA metal acts are now being recognised nationally and internationally for their hard work, well-crafted musicianship and crushing sounds.

Opening the night is Nails Of Imposition, who since their debut in 2008 have steadily risen to the top of death metal here in WA with their razor sharp riffing and solid performances. Following on will be Reflections of Ruin. In the two years they have existed, they have impressed all before them with their highly dynamic and intense modern day metal sound and have quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Headlining the night are veterans Malignant Monster. A raw, cutting-edge, blood-soaked, blackened thrash metal band, Malignant Monster have been at the top of their game for many years and continue to evolve with their mind blowing and theatrical shows. This is a must see show for all fans of heavy music!

Perth, Western Australia is quickly becoming well known as a beat producing mecca, with various beat technicians making heads bounce from far and wide. Beat maker nights, labels, collectives and forums have exponentially expanded making Perth the strong hold of the beats it is today. The WA! Beat Showcase features the most innovative and original beat makers Perth has to offer playing their wares live. The night will feature performances from James Ireland, Diger Rokwell, Assembly Line, The Boost Hero Man, Mostarsk, and Lowaski.

GUN FEVER WAMi FESTIVAL SHOWCASE

Gun Fever presents a selection of WA's finest emerging and established talent in an evening that will leave your ears begging for more. Witness some of our best-kept secrets and brightest young stars turn it up to 11 at Perth's newest venue, The Beat Nightclub on Friday June 1.

Veterans indie rockers Kill Teen Angst are the still the loudest band around and will headline the evening playing songs from their critically acclaimed album, “No Walls In The Sky”. Perth’s best kept hard rock secret is Coveleski, who’ll be making a rare live appearance on this special occasion. Featuring ex members of El Horizonte and Times Up, they’ll be releasing their debut EP later this year. New on the scene, Ex-Nuns find a balance between 80’s hardcore and 90’s slacker rock. What they lack in experience they make up for with intensity, as many a packed bar at their previous shows will testify to. Likewise with Dead Owls - this young two piece turn heads wherever they play, and it’s only a matter of time before their Bright Eyes meets White Stripes brand of indie rock takes them well beyond our state’s borders. Opening up the night will be Perth’s favourite punks, Grim Fandango who’ll be playing a toe tappin’, stripped backed acoustic set under the moniker Grim Fanbanjo.

The 2012 WAMi Festival will return to Perth 26 May to 2 June 2012 for a week-long celebration of local, original contemporary music. With over 35 events packed into festival, the WAMi Live Showcase Series will feature performances from varying genres of music, including Jazz, Folk, Metal, Experimental, Beats, Punk and Rock.

The 2012 WAMi Festival will host over 35 events, all of which will showcase the diverse sounds of Western Australia, as well as seeing the return of the WAMi Business Conference on June 1st.

2012 KISS MY WAMi CD/DVD

The Kiss My WAMi Compilation CD/DVD is widely distributed and is nationally recognized as a compilation featuring the best of WA music. Tracks and music clips selected to feature on the compilation stand to receive valuable exposure and promotion.

Submissions will be accepted online electronically through Sonicbids or manual form.

Kiss My WAMi submissions open Monday 7 November, and close 5:00pm Wednesday 21 December 2011.
