2010 WAMi MUSIC BUSINESS CONFERENCE

The WAMi Music Business Conference returns in 2010! Taking place during the WAMi Festival, the Music Business Conference runs from Thursday 20 May to Saturday 22 May in Northbridge, Western Australia.

Western Australia has an abundance of world-class creative talent when it comes to making music, but just as important are the people behind the scenes – label owners, promoters, managers, event organisers just to name a few – who support and bring this talent to audiences, both at home and abroad. The WAMi Music Business Conference aims to equip both artists and music industry professionals with the latest knowledge and industry practices through a range of panels and practical workshops, and connect both delegates and speakers alike for deal making and idea sharing opportunities.

Returning in 2010 will be the successful ‘Bill Me’ Festival Pitch panels that place artists in front of decision-makers that could get their music onto festival line-ups, as well as the popular Speed Dating sessions that provide delegates one-on-one meetings with respected industry professionals, such as managers, record label representatives and music lawyers.

Since its inception in 2005 the WAMi Music Business Conference has hosted over 1000 guests from all over W.A., the country and the world, and provided tangible commercial outcomes for participants.

The 2010 WAMi Music Business Conference is here to empower you. Whether you’re an emerging self managed artist or an established music organisation, we want to help you grow and make sustainable your music career and business. So make it your Conference!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How many tracks can I submit?
A: Entry is limited to one track per Conference registrant.

Q: Do I have to be from WA to enter a song?
A: No, however the WAM Song of the Year competition is only open to WA residents, so if you submit a track for the WAMi Conference and it wins, you wouldn’t be eligible to receive the prize (wildcard entry to the WAM Song of the Year ‘Grand Prize’ category). Q: Does it cost money to enter my song?
A: No, but you do need to have registered for the WAMi Conference to be eligible to enter a track.

Q: Can I submit my track at the WAMi Conference?
A: Yes, but the deadline is 10am on Day 2 of the Conference (Friday 21 May). You can also submit your song before the WAMi Conference by post or in person to WAM.

Q: Is it guaranteed that my song will be assessed by the Live Judging panel at the Conference?
A: No, all submissions will be shortlisted after the closing date (10am Fri 21 May) and only the top 10 tracks will be assessed in front of the Conference audience by the judging panel.

He is a member of WA Department of Culture and the Arts contemporary music panel and a longstanding board member of WAM, holding the position of President from 2006 - 2008.

ESKIMO JOE – Australia
It was at a Cairo coffee shop said to be thousands of years old in which Eskimo Joe frontman Kav Temperley resolved to cast off his rock-star mask, shut down the smoke machines and close the chapter of the four-times-platinum juggernaut of Black Fingernails, Red Wine. So from a bustling Egyptian eatery that never closes to the sleepy port town of Fremantle, Temperley, guitarist Stuart MacLeod and drummer Joel Quartermain found a new challenge when they regrouped in their home studio – to simply be themselves. The experience was liberating and the result is a beautiful, accomplished album that masterfully captures the finest hour in the band’s 12-year career.

Inshalla is a wonderfully unguarded and inspiring set that harnesses the band’s fresh outlook and channels it through new methods of songwriting and arranging. Recording at Byron Bay’s Studio 301, the trio were pushed beyond their comfort zone and to a new level by acclaimed British rock producer Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, the Pixies, Ben Kweller). JUSTIN WALSHE – Singer/Songwriter, Australia
Blessed with the charisma to entertain crowds on a grand stage and the humility to draw people in on a personal level, it's when Justin Walshe performs solo that you can really appreciate his brilliance. It's in The Justin Walshe Folk Machine that his songs realise their epic “stadium folk” qualities as the 6-piece machine heaves into action with harmonies, slide guitar, fiddle and a moody rhythm section. The Folk Machine's forthcoming album, Walking to China, is due out in June 2010. Geoff’s two pilot artists are Tomas Ford and manager Rachel Davison (The Transients, Brash and Sassy, Good Little Fox). Since December 2009 he has been meeting with them and plotting out strategic issues for their respective projects.

A few months later Juliana do Valle got involved and Fremantle Records’ promotions side took off, regularly running nights around Fremantle featuring some amazing local artists such as Sugarpuss, The Witness, Hand Stands for Ants, Mitch Becker, Helen Shanahan, Sonpsilo Circus and Grace Woodroofe, as well as putting out a few releases in 2010 with Hand Stands for Ants and the Reductors. JUSTIN WALSHE – Singer/Songwriter, Australia
Blessed with the charisma to entertain crowds on a grand stage and the humility to draw people in on a personal level, it's when Justin Walshe performs solo that you can really appreciate his brilliance. Not simply in the epic and intricate stories his pen weaves, nor the effortless progressions and memorable melodies, but something in the magic of the telling that somehow allows and compels you to live the story as it's sung.
