The TOO SOLID Indigenous Music Awards is a brand new program for 2009, honouring achievement by Indigenous Artists in Western Australia. Offered as part of the 17th annual WAMi Festival, there are 14 awards specifically for Indigenous Australian Musicians who reside in Western Australia. The TOO SOLID Music Awards are presented by WAM, and proudly supported by Abmusic & the Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Service.

All artist categories will be judged on popularity & quality of a recorded performance submitted, recorded no more than 10 years ago (1999-2009).

FEMALE ARTIST: Judged on the breadth & quality of musical output; i.e. songwriting, performance &/or production.
MALE ARTIST: Judged on the breadth & quality of musical output; i.e. songwriting, performance &/or production.
FEMALE VOCALIST: Judged on quality of singing & performance.
MALE VOCALIST: Judged on quality of singing & performance.
KEYBOARDIST: Judged on quality of keyboard playing & performance.
GUITARIST: Judged on quality of guitar playing & performance.
BASS PLAYER: Judged on quality of bass playing & performance.
DRUMMER: Judged on quality drumming & performance.
MOST PROMISING NEW ACT: Judged on the breadth & quality of musical output during the first 3 years, for an act founded no earlier than 2006.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Judged from all artist category winners.

All album categories will be judged on popularity & quality of a recorded performance submitted, recorded no more than 10 years ago (1999-2009).

CONTEMPORARY ALBUM: Including, but not limited to Pop, Rock, World, Modern, Indigenous and Experimental Sounds. Excludes Country & R&B genres.
COUNTRY ALBUM: Including, but not limited to Traditional Folk, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, Gospel. Excludes Contemporary & R&B genres.
R&B ALBUM: Including but not limited to Blues, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Urban and Hip-Hop. Excludes Contemporary & Country genres.
MOST POPULAR ALBUM: Judged from all album category winners.

:: ENTRY ::

To nominate yourself or another artist, simply download the 2009 Nomination Form Submissions close at 5:00pm Thursday 9 April 2009.

Entry is FREE to all indigenous musicians in WA - requiring:
  1. A completed 2009 Nomination Form
  2. Recording no more than 10 years old (no earlier than 1999)
  3. Any other support material as requested on the form.
Please post your submissions by 5:00pm, Thursday 9 April 2009 to: WAM - TOO SOLID AWARDS, PO Box 171, Northbridge WA 6865. You can also deliver to WAM, level 1 58 James Street, Northbridge WA by the submission date. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED and submission materials will not be returned.

:: CONDITIONS ::

Entry to the TOO SOLID Indigenous Music Awards is FREE and open to WA resident artists of Indigenous Australian decent, other than direct employees of WAM.

Completed 2009 Nomination Form, together with recording and any support materials, must be received or postmarked by 5:00pm, Thursday 9 April 2009. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED, and submission materials will not be returned.

Each artist/band/act may only enter once, however may enter as many award categories as they see fit. Each entry must be accompanied by a recording no more than 10 years old (not recorded prior to 1999), and must feature the nominee’s own performance &/or original songwriting. Written lyrics alone cannot be accepted.

All entries will be judged by an independent, independently selected, diverse and industry experienced panel. The top 4 nominees for each category will be announced online at www.wam.asn.au and in the media the week commencing Monday 20 April 2009. Winners will be announced Wednesday 6 May 2009 at the TOO SOLID presentation evening, Fly By Night Musicians’ Club in Fremantle. There will be one winner per category and the judging decision is final - no correspondence will be entered into. Prizes are not interchangeable or exchangeable for cash.

The names of winners will be published on or after Thursday 7 May 2009, both online at www.wam.asn.au and in the media.

By entering these awards, songwriters retain full rights to their own music - however agree to limited, non-exclusive use of submitted music during the festival and awards ceremony without fee.
