2013 MUSIC INDUSTRY SUNDOWNER SERIES

MEET THE MUSIC VIDEO MAKERS
MONDAY 10 JUNE | 6:00 - 7:30pm

          
   

WAM and APRA|AMCOS in association with the Australian Directors Guild of WA announce the third instalment of the 2013 Music Industry Sundowner Series, taking place on Monday 10 June at the Rosemount Hotel from 6pm to 7.30pm.

 

This session will focus on the visual element of music consumption and how crucial music video has become to any promotional campaign, its application to digital marketing, the production costs involved and the access to funding.

 

Moderated by Justine Smith (ADG WA), we have invited the crème de la crème of local directors with Ben Young (videos for Drapht, Voltaire Twins, Emperors), Andrew Nowrojee (videos for San Cisco, Felicity Groom, Mama Kin) and Steven Aaron Hughes (Blue Forest Media, Usurper of Modern Medicine).

Steven Aaron Hughes is a practitioner in synchronistic digital technologies in sound and visual mediums, incorporating performance, installation and composition in exploring the limits of sensory perception in relation to human psychology. Recipient of a Bachelor of Communications and Media, majoring in Film and Video and Creative Technologies from Edith Cowan University, in 2008 Hughes founded his own video production company and has since worked as a visual artist on dramatic film and music video productions, collaborating with high profile national and international artists

In addition he writes for and performs in musical acts including Injured Ninja and Usurper of Modern Medicine. His musical projects have  won three WAMi Awards including ‘Most Popular Release’ and ‘Best New Artist,’ and he has been invited to perform in countries including Japan, New Zealand and the US as a showcasing artist at the 2011 ‘South By Southwest’ Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

Video works have been recipients of WA Screen awards including Best Music Video, in addition to selection at nationwide film festivals including Revelation and Melbourne Underground Film Festival. His current creative work focuses on developing dynamic live video art for incorporation into music performance, designing live visuals for touring and performing musical artists.






Ben Young is a West Australian director who directed his first music video in 2003, for Cartman's Got No Reason. in 2012 his video for Voltaire Twins Animalia won best music video nationally at the ATOM awards, beating another video he directed for the same band's single Young Adult. Animalia also was voted number 7 in rages top 50 of 2012.

His video for Drapht's Bali Party was voted Ripe Clip of the Week on Channel V and in less than a couple of months videos he directed for Simone and GirlFunkle and Emperors both were selected as rages Indie of the week. He's been nominated for four West Australian awards under the best music video category and won for his video for Boys, Boys, Boys Ticky Boom in 2011. His personal career highlight in music video was Solaris, also by Voltaire Twins which was banned on YouTube just four hours after its release. in 2013 a video he did for Lazy Calm's Petrol Paint and Glue was selected to screen at the prestigious Sound Kilda.

Ben has also directed videos for Split Seconds, Boom! Bap! Pow! and many more. He also directs commercials, short films, kids television and has several feature length screenplays in development. He currently has a video for Boys, Boys, Boys in post production and several more videos with various bands in planning.



Andrew Nowrojee is an award winning writer/director who graduated from Victorian College of Arts School of Film and Television.

In 2010 he was given the opportunity to work along side Mathew Saville as a director attachment on Cloudstreet. Since then Andrew has been busy making music videos for local artists such as; San Cisco, Mama Kin and Felicity Groom.

He is known for his playful directing style, spontaneity and engagement with the artist. Andrew Nowrojee is currently working on his first feature film 'Ezra.'

2013 WAM Song of the Year /// Catch Music Songwriting Workshops
        

The Mental Health Commission of WA, WAM & Catch Music continue to join forces in 2013 for the presentation of several songwriting workshops around Perth.

  • Over five workshops in June, experienced singer-songwriter and choir director, Dave Johnson will assist Catch Music facilitators Benjamin Power & Andrew Miller and the Fremantle session group in writing, recording, mixing and mastering three songs with a positive message about mental health.

        WAM is offering free entry to WAM Song of the Year's mentally healthy category and any other category
        of choice.

        The Hilton session project is proudly supported by the City of Fremantle Community Arts Funding.


  • Catch Music runs regular community music sessions across Perth and WAM is also proud to announce a series of songwriting workshops:

    * Tuesday 4 June: Midland session with Justin Walshe (The Justin Walshe Folk Machine)
    * Saturday 8 June: Shenton Park session with Bridget Turner (Simone & Girlfunkle / Boys Boys Boys)
    * Tuesday 11 June: Leederville session with Roly Skender (Stoney Joe)

About Dave Johnson
Dave Johnson is a seasoned singer/songwriter who has had many musical incarnations. From Irish band ‘The Fling’, the country rock of ‘Carus and the True Believers’ and as a solo performer he has covered many genres and miles. Dave has performed at festivals Australia-wide and internationally, establishing a loyal following. 

The Starlight Hotel Choir is a music group from St Pat’s - Fremantle’s main shelter and service provider for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. For over four years the choir has been meeting weekly, writing and performing original songs about their experiences along with some moving and rousing covers. They sing songs of hardship and struggle, songs of healing and hope – and songs to forget your troubles and have a damn good time.

About Alexis


Alexis Courtin arrived in Australia from Belgium in 2007, opening the door on the West Australian arts sector by becoming KULCHA's Program Manager between 2008 and 2011.

Joining WAM in 2012, Alexis has previously worked two and half years in Paris for Pro/Art, implementing Qwartz, the international network for new and electronic music, and coordinating the annual Qwartz Electronic Music Awards.

In Brussels, Alexis became publicity and tour assistant at Crammed Discs, an independent, international record label whose output blends world music, rock, pop, and electronica.

In his role as Project Officer Alexis manages the WAM Song of the Year, WA's premier songwriting competition, is the WAM proxy on the CONTROL steering committee, and produces a number of music events on WAM's behalf such as Sunday Bands in the City.

In 2012 Alexis continues to develop WAM Workshops - an initiative delivering year round professional development and networking opportunities to WA musicians and music industry professionals.
