CONTROL: The Business of Music Management

CONTROL, the dynamic five stage program designed to equip music managers with crucial business skills, is now calling for applications. Mid career music managers from around the country are encouraged to apply. The program is presented by the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN), and supported by the Association of Artist Managers. Funding for this initiative has been provided by the Australian Government.

CONTROL will incorporate two residential workshops, the first to be held in Terrigal near Sydney from 25-28 November 2012, the second at the end of the program in 2013. Music industry advocate and lawyer, Shane Simpson, will moderate the first residential workshop, working with a number of business and music industry advisers including leading Australian music managers Bill Cullen, Catherine Haridy and Andy Kelly.

The program provides music managers with practical guidance on developing and maintaining sustainable businesses. It includes a comprehensive review of the different business models found in the contemporary music sector, as well as deep analysis of each business model brought to the workshops.

“CONTROL has really hit its stride,” said Denise Foley, Chair, AMIN. “Past participants sing its praises. They claim its not only changed their businesses for the better, but also their lives.”

“Even after 15 years of managing bands, CONTROL was a real eye opener for me,” said music manager Heath Bradby (Drapht, Karnivool, Papa vs Pretty, Downsyde) “I’m working smarter, not harder, now. My work/life balance is a lot better. The course was incredibly beneficial, and I would urge my peers to make the time to do it.”

“Running a successful music management business isn’t a matter of luck. It takes a great deal of dedication, and a long term strategic plan. CONTROL will give you the tools to get ahead. ” added Catherine Haridy (Eskimo Joe, Adalita, Bob Evans/Jebediah, The Chemist), Chair, Association of Artist Managers.

The course structure comprises:

Stage 1: An online tutorial in SWOT analysis and business planning to be completed by all participants prior to commencement of the residential workshop

Stage 2: A residential workshop to be held in Terrigal near Sydney from 25 - 28 November 2012

Stage 3: Preparation of a business plan to be delivered 1 March 2013

Stage 4: One-to-one feedback on the submitted Business Plan in March 2013

Stage 5:
